Melasti Beach Location Map & Orientation

Coordinates Location: –8.8482927, 115.1425701 (Melasti Beach, Ungasan, south Bukit), Open in Google Maps.

Orientation

  • Melasti sits on Bali’s southern Bukit Peninsula, in South Kuta.
  • From the cliff top, a paved, cliff-cut road descends directly to the shoreline.
  • The beachfront area spans roughly 25 hectares, with facilities and parking spread along the south-facing bay.
  • A scenic clifftop trail runs above the beach and is easy to follow for short walks.
  • The shoreline is about 1 km of white sand backed by high limestone cliffs.
  • Access is straightforward with clear signage directing visitors to the beach level via the main cliff road.
  • Near the beach-level parking, look for the wooden ship installation as a handy meet-up landmark.
  • Prewedding photoshoots are common; however, permits or fees apply for professional shoots.

Before you go, see Prices/Permits. Meanwhile, for photo angles on the cliff road and on the sand, see Things to Do: Best Photo Spots.

How to Get to Melasti Beach Location (Routes & Travel Times)

Public transport in Ungasan is limited, so most visitors use a private car with a driver, ride-hailing, or a scooter. Use live navigation, because traffic changes by time of day.

Getting to Melasti Beach: Modes

  • Driver (car + driver): easiest door-to-door for groups, and the signed cliff road goes straight down to beach level (no long stair climbs).
  • Ride-hailing (Grab/Gojek): drop off at beach level. Meanwhile, pickups are usually at the hilltop meet point outside the ticket barrier, so allow a short uphill walk or arrange a return driver.
  • Scooter: wear a helmet, and watch the heat and the road gradients on the descent and ascent (paved, steep in sections).

Melasti Beach Travel Times (light–moderate traffic)

  • Kuta: 45–60 min
  • Seminyak: 50–80 min
  • Uluwatu: 20–30 min
  • Nusa Dua: 25–40 min
  • Ubud: ~120 min (longer at peaks/holidays)
  • Canggu: 90–120 min

Toll Tip for the Melasti Beach Route

The Mandara toll is often faster when coming from the north or east (Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, airport corridor).

Moreover, for viewpoint tips on the cliff road S-curve? See Things to Do: Cliff Road Bend.

Melasti Beach Parking & Access (at a glance)

Paved cliff road descending to Melasti Beach with signed access to shoreline.
Follow the signed cliff road; it descends directly to beach level.
  • Two signed cliff-road entrances. One beach-level lot (cars, scooters, buses).
  • Main entrance: signed, wide cliff road descending directly to beach level. This access is preferred for clearer signage and an easier gradient.
  • Secondary entrance: the southern approach is steeper, and conditions vary, generally for cars and scooters only.
  • Ramp to sand (strollers and older visitors).
  • Guest-only bays for clubs, therefore, follow signage.
  • Fees & payment: entrance and parking are collected at the hilltop gates. See Entrance Fee & Permits for current rates and payment methods.
  • Sunbeds: available from public vendors, and availability varies by spot and season.
  • Permits: a professional photoshoot or drone requires approval; therefore, confirm onsite (beach office).
  • Safety: steep paved switchbacks, brake early, and do not stop on the roadway.

Park at beach level; pay the entrance and parking fee at the hilltop gate.

Where should I set up on the sand for clean frames? See Things to Do: Twin Cliff Frame and Waterline Reflections.

Melasti Beach Swimming & Snorkeling Conditions

Water & Dayparts

Nearshore water is usually gentle with a sandy underfoot. Meanwhile, visibility changes with swell and tide. In general, mornings and late afternoons are calmer. A shallow reef band about 100 m offshore makes waves break early, so the shore water stays much gentler.

Calm, sandy shoreline at Melasti Beach; typical nearshore conditions near the reef.
Mornings are calmer; check flags and tides before swimming.

Surf & Watersports

Surfing is not Melasti’s strength because the nearshore is sheltered and waves are inconsistent. For proper breaks, head to Uluwatu. Meanwhile, a shallow coral shelf also limits SUP and kayak range.

Family Note

Children at Melasti Beach gentle shoreline; swim inside red-yellow flags.
Nearshore is calmer; supervise kids and stay inside the flagged zone.

The main swimming area is usually the calmest. However, supervise children closely, especially at high tide. Consider flotation aids for weaker swimmers, and stay inside the red-and-yellow flagged zone.

Zones & Safety

Rip current warning sign at Melasti Beach with safety instructions on the sand.
Read the rip current advice and swim between the red and yellow flags.
  • Swim between red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards patrol, and avoid red-flagged sections and far-out currents.
  • Lifeguards are typically on duty during the day and always follow onsite signage.
  • Seasonal caution: conditions can change faster in the Dec–Feb rainy season. Expect variable visibility and stronger currents after storms.
  • Keep clear of cliff edges. Rims can be unstable with gusts and wave spray.

Snorkeling

On very calm days, a simple mask can be pleasant close to shore. Even so, Melasti is not a prime snorkeling site.

Bring a mask only on very calm days. For the best spots, see Things to Do, Tide Pools & Cliff-Base.

What to bring

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 30+)
  • Drinking water
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Optional mask
  • Water shoes if sensitive to occasional rock or coral bits

Pack light footwear for rocky patches, carry a small trash bag and a reusable bottle or eco-bag, and respect any roped or sacred areas.

Best Time to Visit Melasti Beach (Weather, Crowds, Light)

At a glance: Go 07:00–10:00 for calmer water, or arrive by ~17:00 for sunset color. Parking fills toward evening.

Operating Hours

Open 24 hours daily. Light, heat, and parking pressure vary by time of day, so plan accordingly.

Time Windows & Arrival

  • Morning 07:00–10:00 for quieter and cooler conditions
  • Late afternoon, 16:30–18:30, for golden hour and sunset
  • Arrive by 17:00 on busy days to secure parking and a good spot

Evening Note

Plan to stay 10–30 minutes after sunset for peak color; parking is a short walk from the sand. If attending the on-beach Kecak, park before 17:00 and follow the amphitheater signs.

Best sunset spots and example photos: see Sunset Views and Eastern Bluff.

Crowd Tips

  • Crowds build toward sunset, and weekends or holidays are busier.
  • Arrive earlier for parking and space on the sand, then linger for the afterglow.
  • The ~1 km shoreline disperses people, so walk down-bay for more room.

Seasonal Notes

  • Apr–Oct (dry): sunnier with lower rain odds, generally busier.
  • Nov–Mar (wet): humid with short, intense showers. Glare or haze is possible around storms. Also, carry a light cover and protect your gear.

Melasti Beach: Public Area vs Beach Clubs (What to Expect)

Public Area

Wide white-sand public area at Melasti Beach with gentle nearshore and cliffs.
Open-sand public area, easy DIY beach time via the signed cliff road.

Open-sand access with a relaxed vibe and direct shoreline entry via the paved cliff road is ideal when you want DIY beach time without venue rules.

Facilities Snapshot

Use the designated dressing rooms; confirm prewedding permits and fees onsite.
  • Toilets and showers (paid or donation-based)
  • Changing rooms and foot-wash stations in the parking area
  • Shaded gazebos/seating and a prayer room
  • Warungs/cafes and small convenience stores for drinks and snacks

Tip: Bring small cash for facility donations and day-use needs.

Toilets/showers are donation-based; carry small cash for facilities.

Beach Clubs

Multiple venues share the same bay (e.g., White Rock, Palmilla, Minoo, TT). Therefore, expect relaxed daytime pool vibes that often ramp up to DJ sets in the evening. Meanwhile, on weekends and holidays, popular clubs may require reservations. For daybed policies and minimum spends, see the Prices Cheat Sheet.

Want a nice background by the amphitheater? Go to Kecak Backdrop.

Food timing

Furthermore, many warungs/restaurants open around 08:00–09:00. If you arrive earlier, bring snacks and water, as natural shade on the sand is limited.

Sunbeds & Umbrellas

  • Available along the public beach (vendor-managed) and at beach clubs, availability varies by season and time.
  • For typical costs and venue rules, see the Prices Cheat Sheet.
  • Arrive early on weekends/holidays for the best placement.

How to Choose

Pick the public area for flexible, low-friction beach time. Meanwhile, choose a club for added amenities and a hosted atmosphere. Both sit on the same Melasti shoreline, so you can walk or drive between them as plans change.

Melasti Beach Location: Disambiguation (Ungasan vs Legian vs Jalan Melasti)

  • Melasti Beach (Ungasan): Cliff-backed, south-facing bay on the Bukit (South Kuta). A paved cliff road descends directly to the shoreline. Above all, this is the photogenic beach that most visitors mean.
  • Melasti (Legian / Resort): A hotel/area name in Legian near Kuta with a town-beach vibe and shops, not the Uluwatu cliff setting.
  • Jalan Melasti (Legian): A street near Legian Beach (markets, eateries). Useful for in-town directions, not the Ungasan beach.

Tip: Don’t confuse Melasti Beach (Ungasan) with Melasti (Legian/Resort) or Jalan Melasti near Kuta, different areas, and no cliff-road beach.

Above all, you want Melasti Beach (Location in Ungasan), the cliff-backed bay on the Bukit. Back to Map.

Melasti Beach Area Planner: Uluwatu Temple + Jimbaran (Half-Day)

Buffer: add 20–30 minutes per hop for parking/traffic, especially near sunset and on weekends.

Flow A (PM): Temple, Afterglow at Melasti, Jimbaran Dinner

  • Uluwatu Temple (16:00–17:15): arrive while it’s cooler, then take a short clifftop walk.
  • Drive to Melasti (about 25–30 min): aim to arrive by ~17:00 for parking afterward, enjoy the pastel afterglow 10–30 minutes after local sunset.
  • Optional: on-beach Kecak most evenings, book via Melasti Kecak Tickets.
  • Jimbaran dinner (around 19:15–20:30): it’s a short peninsula hop beachfront seafood suits post-sunset timing.

Watching the show? Get framing tips in the Kecak Backdrop.

Flow B (AM): Melasti swim, Nusa Dua lunch, Uluwatu views

  • Melasti (09:00–11:00): expect calmer water and softer light; however, shade on the sand is limited.
  • Lunch in Nusa Dua (12:00): next, make an easy northbound hop on peninsula roads.
  • Uluwatu clifftop views (15:30–16:30): arrive before the late-afternoon crowd, the Uluwatu temple is open until early evening.
